What is a Higher Power

Higher Power is a term which describes a spiritual god-like being.  There are many descriptions for what people refer to as their higher power.  Since each person has their own perception, world views, and interpretation of reality, the term higher power will have a slightly different meaning for each one of us.  This short article explores the meaning of higher powers in the mystical and metaphysical tradition.  Lower case letters are purposely used in this article to take emphasis off the nature of god debate. 
Many people clearly understand the term higher power to be a monotheistic god.  Certain fundamentalist and conservative religious groups argue that there is only one true god of the universe.   Such religious groups contend that faith in any other higher power is a false belief.

Other people attribute the existence of a personal higher power to guardian angels, spirit guides, ascended masters, and polytheistic gods (meaning many gods).  Some people prefer to side step religious controversies and refer to their higher power as their inner god, god of their heart, universal source, divine spirit, I am, mother gaia, etcetera. 

Mystics follow a path of illumination.  They seek spiritual knowledge in the higher realms.  Understanding of the god source, is of prime importance to students who explore the great mysteries of the universe.  A mystic might use the term higher-self or greater-self to describe a higher power.  Both phrases attempt to communicate the immenseness and vastness of these mysterious beings.  Perhaps these celestial forces could be seen as both higher and greater powers.

Higher forces could be described as etheric beings or consciousnesses of immense intelligence and wisdom that guides and directs the decision-making and life path of a person.  Some people consider this celestial being to be their higher-self or greater-self.  Each of one us is thought to have a higher power we can turn to for support in dealing with lifes tests and challenges.  This makes the higher-self a kind of personal companion. 

In the mystical tradition, a higher-self is composed of vibrational energy like all entities that reside in the infinite multiverse.  Some spiritual teachers refer to the higher-self as a collective soul or collective being.  It is believed collective entities that act as higher powers, are comprised of our past-life personalities (past lives), and lives from all other existences.  Our past lives belong to us, and we belong to them.  In this case, past-life personalities and alternate existences are united in power as a collective soul, higher-self, or master over-soul.

If you are willing to follow this interpretation of a higher power, consider that higher forces exist as pure consciousness or awareness.  When a spirit or personality has completed its mission in life and made its transition, the soul will typically incarnate into a new life. It does this by creating a completely new version of itself to experience life once again (reincarnation).  Therefore, consciousness is able to slit itself to expand into several dimensional realties at one time.  Thus, through the process of splitting we see that all humans are members of their respective higher-self or collective soul. 

In each life, a person accumulates an incredible number of valuable life experiences.  These unique experiences are added to the greater-self, increasing its knowledge base and expanding its level of consciousness.  Our personal growth lends itself to the spiritual evolution of the entire collective.  As a result, the collective expands the dimensions of its understanding (of itself).  This is called the principle of growth or the principle of expanding consciousness.

The greater-self is your ally. Your greater-self is interested in your personal success.  The higher forces invest a considerable amount of energy and effort in support of our lifes journey.  Our supernatural benefactor guides us in triumphing over adversity.  Overcoming our tests and challenges leads to spiritual growth. 

Your higher-self may be called upon at any time for consultation.  By focusing your thoughts or concerns in the form of a question, you are sure to receive an answer.  The reply can come in many ways.  It may be received through intuition, dreams, visions, signs, synchronicities, etcetera.  You must be open and receptive to receiving these subtle communications.  In this sense, a higher power is an indispensable resource.  It is a phenomenal source of power and inspiration to have on your side.

So instead of seeing certain situations as good or bad, we just see them as information that we can then utilize for future creations. We are in perfect essence right now, and that's how we chose to be, and how we created ourselves right from the start, which is in the state of perfect grace.

Don't listen to what other people say. Follow the beat of your own drum. Allowing for the input of other people will only bring cacophony to the music you are trying to make. If you have an original idea, don't waste your time and effort trying to make people understand. They won't. And the help you will probably get comes in the form of negative feedback. If all those geniuses listened to their peers, we would probably still be living in the middle ages.

Each of us has qualities that make us unique. Each of us is unlike anyone else on the planet.

So why, as a speaker, would you want to model yourself after someone else?

I enjoy watching speakers who are engaging, entertaining, moving, intense, funny, bold, serene, and/or just plain brilliant. Do I learn from them? Of course!

But do I try to be like them on stage? No way!

We all have lots of room for improvement, even the pros. I'm always learning new ways of engaging an audience, keeping their attention, and leaving them with a strong message when I'm done. You may like the energy level of one speaker, or the powerful voice of another. But be careful when striving to emulate; inspiration is a good thing, but in the long run, you have to be inspired by yourself.

In a culture where there are 50 new self-help books published every day (or more), many of us spend way too much time trying to "fix" ourselves or find out what's "wrong" with us instead of embracing the special qualities that make us great.

Former senator and current presidential candidate John Edwards says in one of his online "webisodes":

"I'd rather be successful or unsuccessful based on who I really am, not based on some plastic Ken doll. But . . . we're so conditioned to say what's safe . . . and it's hard to shed all that."

It's that same fear expressed by so many of us, that the real "us" is just not good enough, or that we have to fit into some mold to be accepted. What would happen if you just decided not to be like other speakers and just be "you?" Would some people not like you? Maybe. Would you miss out on an occasional speaking opportunity? Maybe. Would the world come to an end? Absolutely not.

We all have insecurities. As speakers or performers, we're all concerned with our image to some degree. Some don't like how their voices sound. Some wish they were taller, or shorter, or thinner. Some of us have speech impediments.

The things that you consider "flaws" may not be noticeable to most people. And even if they are noticeable, they are most likely only considered flaws by YOU.

The reality is that being "you" is the best thing you can do for yourself and for your audience. It's how you build trust with your audience. It's how you build a relationship with the audience. They want to relate to and connect with a real person, not a robot. And if some people don't love you . . . well . . . so what? It's really not possible to be loved by everyone, so just let that go.

A few years ago, a friend gave me a tiny beaded pouch, with ten tiny squares of paper inside, each one printed with something about me.

"You have a great voice." "You're fun to be with." "You're strong." "You're creative." "You're intense."

It was a touching gift, and one I still have. This is someone who knows me as well as I know myself, or better.

Do you know who you are? What would your ten squares of paper say?

It's one thing to know who you are on the inside, but it's another thing to share it with the world - with pride.

Those little squares of paper describe parts of my personality. My personality is my signature - my "brand" - if you will.

What's your brand? What makes you unique? What do people remember about you when you walk off the stage?

You don't have to mimic other speakers' mannerisms, vocal traits or physical movement - or follow public speaking "rules" that don't work for you. Create your own way of doing things. Provide the audience with the connection that they desire with a human being, not a robot.

Cherish your uniqueness. It makes you stand out in the crowd.
